The Concept
Drawing from the photographic archive of 19th-century photographer Mathew Brady, Figments & Reconstructions fragments historical photographs into slivered moments — frame edges, liminal landscapes, flashes of faces and distant gazes — to construct ambiguous images of lives once captured in time. These fragments become a meditation on memory and the preservation of history: what we choose to remember, what is lost or forgotten, and how meaning changes as the record becomes incomplete. In reconstructing these remnants, the series asks what survives when the original context is gone, and whether fragments can still preserve something essential of who we were.
