Bio/About

Chris Ferebee creates contemporary, design-driven visual work that translates across art, interiors, products, and cultural collaborations. Drawing from a multidisciplinary background spanning fine art, photography, furniture design, graphic design, and creative direction, his practice explores materials, forms, and cultural and visual references as sources for unexpected combinations and new visual languages.

His work moves fluidly between gallery walls, interiors, products, and collaborative projects, reflecting a long-standing interest in how visual ideas can exist across different contexts without losing their conceptual integrity. Whether constructing abstract compositions from historical imagery or developing design systems rooted in modernist principles, Ferebee's work seeks moments where order emerges from complexity and familiar forms take on new meaning.

Ferebee's work has been licensed, published, exhibited, and collected internationally. Represented by Photonica/Getty Images and GraphiStock, his photography has appeared in projects for Apple, Microsoft, Sony Music, Alfred A. Knopf, Bank of America, American Express, and numerous other clients. His furniture and product designs have been exhibited internationally and featured in publications including International Design Yearbook, The Design Encyclopedia (Museum of Modern Art), Ultimate New York Design, and Bent Ply: The Art of Plywood Furniture.

In 2019, his Hive Shelving Unit prototype was acquired by the Carnegie Museum of Art for its permanent design collection and on view as part of the Extraordinary Ordinary Things exhibit.

Across these disciplines, a consistent investigation connects the work: combining familiar materials, forms, and visual information in unexpected ways to create new relationships and possibilities. This inquiry informs projects ranging from limited-edition prints and exhibitions to hospitality environments, licensing collaborations, and design-forward partnerships.

He lives and works in Norfolk, Virginia.

Statement
My work begins with curiosity rather than a predetermined outcome. I'm interested in how images, objects, typography and the artifacts of print culture accumulate meaning over time, and what happens when those systems are reorganized into something unexpected.

Growing up surrounded by collections of natural specimens, fossils, sea shells, books, models, and carefully chosen decorative objects taught me that relationships between things can be just as compelling as the things themselves. That way of seeing continues to shape my practice, whether I'm making assemblages, collage, prints, photography, sculptural work, or designing furniture.

Being largely self-taught has allowed me to move freely between disciplines over the past three decades. Rather than treating art, design, and craft as separate pursuits, I approach each as another way of investigating composition, material, memory, and visual language.

Some works celebrate the optimism of mid-century print culture and aesthetics; others explore more somber ideas about place, history, and perception. Regardless of the medium, my goal is to make work that rewards close looking, sparks curiosity, and ultimately optimizes for optimism.

Practice
Mission

Chris Ferebee Studio creates contemporary visual work across fine art, photography, design, and objects, moving freely between materials, processes, and visual languages to create work that is thoughtful, distinctive, and intended to be experienced, interpreted, and lived with.

Vision

To develop a distinctive, multidisciplinary body of work and collaborate with designers, architects, brands, cultural institutions, and other creative partners to bring original visual ideas into spaces, objects, and experiences.

Approach

The studio moves freely between disciplines, allowing ideas to determine the medium rather than the other way around. Some work exists as singular original artwork; other ideas can become photography, editions, products, environments, or collaborations.

The goal is consistent: to make thoughtful, visually compelling work that has a life beyond the moment in which it is created.
